Background of the Study

Pediatric emergencies require timely and appropriate interventions to prevent mortality and long-term complications. Conditions such as respiratory distress, sepsis, dehydration, convulsions, and trauma contribute significantly to child mortality rates in Nigeria (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). The role of nurses in pediatric emergency care is critical, as they are often the first responders in triage, resuscitation, and stabilization of critically ill children (Adebayo & Musa, 2023).

Effective pediatric emergency care requires both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), fluid management, airway management, and early recognition of life-threatening conditions (Okonkwo et al., 2024). However, studies indicate that many nurses in resource-limited settings, including General Hospital, Minna, face challenges such as inadequate training, lack of standardized protocols, and limited exposure to pediatric emergency cases (Aliyu & Salisu, 2023).

Despite the importance of nurses’ competency in pediatric emergencies, there is limited research on their knowledge and practice levels in Nigerian hospitals. This study seeks to evaluate nurses' knowledge and practice of pediatric emergency care at General Hospital, Minna, identifying potential gaps and areas for improvement.

Statement of the Problem

Child mortality in Nigeria remains high, with many deaths occurring due to inadequate emergency care (WHO, 2024). Nurses play a vital role in pediatric emergency management, yet deficiencies in training, inadequate resources, and lack of standardized guidelines contribute to suboptimal care delivery (Bello & Okafor, 2023).

At General Hospital, Minna, reports suggest that pediatric emergency outcomes could be improved through enhanced nurse training and adherence to best practices (Eze et al., 2024). However, limited empirical data exist on nurses' current knowledge and practical application of pediatric emergency care. Understanding these gaps is crucial for strengthening pediatric emergency response and reducing preventable child deaths.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess nurses' knowledge of pediatric emergency care at General Hospital, Minna.
  2. To evaluate the practical application of pediatric emergency care skills by nurses.
  3. To identify challenges affecting the effective delivery of pediatric emergency care.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of nurses' knowledge of pediatric emergency care at General Hospital, Minna?
  2. How effectively do nurses apply pediatric emergency care skills in clinical practice?
  3. What challenges hinder the effective delivery of pediatric emergency care?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses at General Hospital, Minna, have adequate knowledge of pediatric emergency care.
  2. Practical application of pediatric emergency care skills is significantly influenced by training and experience.
  3. Identified challenges negatively impact the quality of pediatric emergency care provided by nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in the pediatric unit and emergency department of General Hospital, Minna. Limitations may include self-reported biases, variability in emergency case exposure, and challenges in direct observation of clinical practice.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pediatric Emergency Care: Medical interventions aimed at stabilizing critically ill or injured children.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): A life-saving procedure used to restore breathing and circulation in cases of cardiac arrest.
  • Airway Management: Techniques used to ensure an open airway in pediatric patients experiencing respiratory distress.
  • Child Mortality: Death of children under the age of five due to preventable or treatable conditions.
